Young Lewisham cricketer takes top honour at Lord’s
Callum Walters, an outstanding young prospect at Forest Hill Secondary School, Lewisham, became the first winner of the Alex Roberts-Miller Memorial Trophy, when Capital Kids Cricket and MCC gave the best part of 300 London state school children the thrill of appearing on the main arena at Lord’s in May, 2009. Golden handshake – Callum with Richard Roberts-Miller
With perfect timing, the 2009 CKC/MCC Festival of Cricket took place on the ground where, only a day or two earlier, Capital Kids’ most famous “old boy” Ravi Bopara had completed a brilliant test century against the West Indies on his international debut at “Headquarters.”
“Ravi’s achievement is a wonderful inspiration to today’s inner London hopefuls,” said William Greaves, co-founder and trustee of Capital Kids Cricket, “but it was another youngster who was specially remembered at the Festival.
“A 28-year-old lad called Alex Roberts-Miller, former head boy of Charterhouse and outstanding all-round sportsman, had everything ahead of him when his life was tragically cut short by a hit-and-run driver seven years ago. His family responded by setting up a foundation in his name to help young sports aspirants follow Alex’s footsteps and the Foundation has donated no less than £12,000 to CKC and inner-London youngsters in the last three years.”
Everyone a winner – Capital Kids’ Haydn Turner hands out precious mementos of a great occasion Alex’s father, Richard Roberts-Miller, presented the trophy, which will annually be awarded to the young cricketer who displays the most impressive all-round skills on the day.
Children from nine inner London primary schools, Hartley(Newham), Edmund Waller(Lewisham), Bigland Green (Tower Hamlets), Grafton Primary School (Islington), Carlton (Camden), St Mary of Angels (Westminster), Millfields Community (Hackney), Henwick (Greenwich) and Yerbury (Islington), five boys’ secondary schools, Thomas Tallis (Greenwich), Mossbourne Academy (Hackney), Central Foundation (Islington), Forest Hill ( Lewisham) and Swanlea (Tower Hamlets) and four girls’ secondary schools: Swanlea (Tower Hamlets), Thomas Tallis (Greenwich), St Angelas (Newham ) and Eltham Hill (Greenwich) took part.
Individual primary school awards went to Mark Anthony, St. Mary of the Angel (fielding), Lewis Smith, Millfields (batting) and Ottis Whilby, Edmund Waller (bowling), and secondary school winners were Sara Demuil from Thomas Tallis school, Greenwich (batting) and Ruby Perera from St Angelas school Newham (bowling.)

But all participants were the day’s real winners – taking home a certificate, signed by MCC president, the former England and Kent spinner Derek Underwood, and MCC secretary and chief executive, Keith Bradshaw, to testify that they had played cricket on the world’s most famous arena.
